TRADER JOE’S TOP 5

We’ve been trying to take photos of any food that we like so that we can try to remember to buy it again. The choice here in the USA is so vast, and everything is so different from home, that it’s difficult to remember which things we like and which things we don’t! Following from Friday’s post about Trader Joe’s being one of our favourite place to shop, I thought I’d share our top 5 things we like to buy at the moment. Some of them are pretty random…

This is salad made from kale, brussels sprouts, broccoli, green and red cabbage. We mix it with the broccoli slaw, which is just very finely cut broccoli and carrot and it makes a good base for a crunchy salad that is much more interesting than just kale or lettuce on it’s own.

This is our favourite salsa that we’ve tried so far. I don’t like salsa to taste too tomatoey (I know, I know it’s made of tomatoes but I don’t like to think about that when I eat it!) I also don’t like any taste of vinegar. This one has a nice, slightly smokey flavour with just a medium heat so it’s easy to eat with a pile of tortilla chips.

Bread has been a big problem for us here. This is the most “normal” tasting bread that we have found yet. At home, we love toast, particularly Warburtons Seeded Batch, that is our bread of choice as it’s nice and savoury and seedy. Here, all the bread we’ve tried has a sweet aftertaste, I don’t know what it is and it’s hard to describe but to me it doesn’t taste savoury enough, it’s too sweet? As this is sourdough, it does have a hint of “sweetness” but because it’s sourdough it can get away with it. It’s nice and seedy and toasted, with the right butter (another story for another day!) it hits the toast spot when needed!

Bacon and Cheddar popcorn….don’t judge until you’ve tried it. A lady at Trader Joe’s told us it was the most delicious popcorn she’d ever eaten so we bought a bag to try. We now pick a bag up every time we go!

I think the coconut milk in this ice cream stops it from being too sugary which makes it the best strawberry ice cream we’ve found in the freezer section yet…..and we’ve tried a few!

We have had a few not so great things….sugar snap pea crisps won’t make their way into our cupboards again! But it’s fun trying all the foods to find new favourites!
