WE’RE GOING TO NEED TO BUY A BOOKCASE

We had to jetteson most of our books before we moved here, only a select few recipe books made the cut as books are heavy! We’ve been reading on a Kindle for months but there is something lovely about owning physical books.

This Christmas, Santa started off our new book collection with an awesome selection.

I got two colouring books which are really fun and a good way to relax and distract myself without having to concentrate on reading or following a story. I think I’ll get a lot of use out of these in the next few months.

I got a new diary with a lovely Orla Kiely print cover (I actually bought this for Santa, it was only $5 in TjMaxx, bargain!)

Chris got a book about The Wire, one of his favourite TV programs and is already a good way into reading it. We were both surprised by how big the book is, it’ll keep him busy for a while!

We also got a book which we both want to read about French parenting. It looks really interesting and if anyone has any other recommendations on books to read before the baby arrives, please let us know!

As I’ve mentioned before, I love to learn things about American states and this book is a beautiful, huge book of interesting facts and cute illustrations about all the states. I’m really looking forward to reading it and boring Chris with all the trivia!

Santa didn’t forget baby and we now have lots of new books to add to our growing collection. We don’t believe children can have too many books and by the way the baby wriggles every night when we read to them, I think they really enjoy it already! Again, if anyone has any recommendations of books for babies please let us know as we hadn’t realised how different the selection is here compared to back home. We’ve managed to find a few we recognise  in a local second hand book shop, we have some favourites coming from the UK and I found a local library to explore but we’re not familiar with Dr Seuss and the other characters who seem very popular here, so need a bit of guidance!

Now we just need a place to store them all!

  1. We love books at home, too, and it’s hard to narrow down the best ones but here are some favourite board books for 0-2 years:-

    Tales From Acorn Wood (4 in series). Lift the flap books with plenty of detail.
    The Tiger That Came to Tea
    Busy Airport (I have a feeling your little one might be seeing a few of these and it’s a good one to keep for travelling!).
    How to Hide a Lion,
    Pip and Posy series (teaches values like sharing, being nice, etc),
    Brown Bear Brown Bear, What do you see? (good for colours),
    The Very Hungry Caterpillar,
    We’re Going on a Bear Hunt,
    Each Peach Pear Plum,
    Wow! Said the Owl (good one for teaching colours)

    Also pre-baby….Sleep Sense by Megan Faure & Ann Richardson. I have a fair few baby sleep books but this is by far the most useful and helped me sleep train my second baby from birth for his day-time naps (night-times another story).

    Do you have the ‘That’s Not My..’ series over there? My little guy loves these touch and feel books, too.

  2. Congratulations on baby and on your big move!

    You can’t go wrong with the original Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne. My oldest is eleven and still likes to listen to those stories. And a nice copy of Mother Goose is good to have. Goodnight Moon is a baby classic. These have stood the test in our home. Other than that, read aloud any good, interesting story that is written well even if you think most of it will go over his/her head.

    I don’t know how it is in the rest of the English-speaking world, but many of the bricks and mortar bookstores in the States are terrible for buying books. They sell a lot of cute things but not a lot of quality literature. There are exceptions of course.

    • Thank you. I still have my Winnie the Pooh books from growing up! I haven’t heard of Goodnight Moon so I’ll look out for that one. We are actually finding that second hand bookshops have a better/more interesting selection and you feel like you’re giving the book a second chance to be loved! Thank you for taking the time to give us some recommendations, they’re really appreciated.
